NEW YORK (Reuters) - In a nation where obesity is the second-leading cause of death, 33 million Americans don't know where their next meal is coming from -- a year-round paradox that only becomes more pronounced during the holidays.
Americans have taken the battle of the bulge to heart. Some 50 million of them will spend more than $30 billion on weight loss products this year, but only about 5 percent will succeed in keeping the weight off.
In image-conscious America, thousands battle eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia, while others who can't afford three square meals a day opt for cheaper junk food, which is ubiquitous.
"Fresh produce is more expensive than junk food. Fresh fruit and vegetables are harder to get than junk food," said Ertharin Cousin, chief operating officer of America's Second Harvest, the nation's food bank network.

I go to a supermarket well, in order to make family's meal. Then, I discover the fact "Fresh produce is more expensive than junk food." However, I love the word "there is nothing more effective than health", and I buy the Fresh produce from local. In fact, the Fresh produce is more expensive than an ordinary nourishing foods. I know them if some of nourishing foods are junk food, so I recommend Fresh produce rather than nourishing foods for your health. |

Communities were swept away and homes engulfed by waves up to 10m high after the quake created a wall of water that sped across the oceans.
At least 23,000 people were killed - mostly from sea surges triggered by the worst earthquake in 40 years.Thousands are missing, millions are homeless, and the disaster zone is now threatened with outbreaks of disease. "The relief operation would probably cost "many billions of dollars"., said UN emergency relief coordinator Jan Egeland.
International organisations and countries have pledged to help.

waves brought the tragedy to the area along the shore of each country.
The stricken area of each country has million things what should be done in respect of healthy. For example, the following thing is needed. medical teams, medical facilities, medicine, sanitary drinking water, nutritional foods. I want to raise funds to the Red Cross for the disaster victims.
wave warning is now discussed by Japan in an earthquake frequent occurrence area. Many subways and underground centers are located in Japan, and people are unable to take refuge from there for a short time. I think that a quick wave warning is required. |

Kevin Short / Special to The Daily Yomiuri
In the Northern Hemisphere, most species of waterfowl breed on marshes, lakes and tundra in Alaska, Canada and Siberia. In winter they migrate southward, and a wide range of species spend the cold months right here in Japan.
Waterfowl are typically aquatic or at least semiaquatic, with wide webbing between their front three toes for propulsion when swimming. In many species the male is colorful and the female drab.
With the winter solstice just around the corner, now is the perfect time to take up the fascinating hobby of bird watching. All you need is a pair of binoculars, and a few minutes at the nearest lake or pond. Waterfowl are excellent subjects to start with. At this time of year they are usually out in the open, and can be easily spotted and observed.
About a pair of binoculars, I recommend a good solid pair, made by a reputable manufacturer of optical equipment, with a rating of 7 or 8 power, and small enough to carry around in your backpack.

I was uninterested to bird watching, but I did cycling frequently and I got interested in the waterfowl which comes to Lake Biwa of winter gradually. Now, I am fortunate for my finding a waterfowl in cycling. This happiness seems to be the feeling of the Japanese who goes to see a cherry tree. |

Lying Makes Brain Work Harder
Brain scans show that the brains of people who are lying look very different from those of people who are telling the truth, U.S. researchers said .
Using FMRI as a lie detector is expensive, but it may be worthwhile in some cases -- such as trying to question a terrorism suspect, or in a high-profile corporate crime case, Faro said.
Wired News

Do you know? Usually, the human being under thinking moves his eyes to the upper right, and the human being under recollection moves his eyes to the upper left.
I knew this in a TV program and experimented for detecting a lie. "I explain the procedure of this experiment. First, I question you. Next, you answer with lies." Consequently, my brother spoke about his experience in his elementary school, and moved his eyes to the upper right. It is the motion for considering lies. Not the motion for remembering. In short, this small experiment was successful.
If you are a multimillionaire, I will recommend to buy the newest lie detector. But a cheaper method will be chosen except multimillionaires. For example, a method of seeing a partner's eyes, it's a cheaper one. |

Long Computer Use May Be Linked to Eye Disease
"Myopic workers with a history of long-term computer using might have an increased risk of visual field abnormalities, possibly related to glaucoma," Dr Masayuki Tatemichi, of the Toho University School of Medicine in Tokyo, said in a report in the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
The researchers studied about 10,000 workers in Japan who were chosen for testing as part of a routine medical check-up. The average age of the participants was 43. About 5 percent of the workers in the study had visual field problems.
They believe the optic nerve in short-sighted people may be more vulnerable to computer stress than in normal eyes.
"Computer stress is reaching higher levels than have ever been experienced before. In the next decade, therefore, it might be important for public health professionals to show more concern about myopia and visual field abnormalities in heavy computer users," the scientists added.

| Garden / The garden of my home |
[Nov. 16th, 2004|09:47 pm] |
The garden of my home seems to be woods. 20 years ago, in order to sell, many small trees were planted in the garden, and trees grew up the more than twice of my height.
The flower of trees blooms in response to warm lights, and trees attach fruits in response to cold winds. Sensitive plants tell me a seasonal change earlier than television news.
When I am in a big city, I look around 360 degrees and I know at last that there is no mountain anywhere. When going home, it pleases me that nature increases gradually within my field of view, and, of course, the destination station is the garden like woods. |

| How safe is our food? |
[Nov. 16th, 2004|01:48 am] |
I introduce the summary of the report, How safe is our food? / Experts warn about danger of chemicals Daily Yomiuri On-Line .
Japanese continued to believe that ingestion of chemicals was harmless provided it was kept under a certain level.
In 1996, however, people were shocked by the warning in "Our Stolen Future," a book written by Theo Colburn, Dianne Dumanoski and John Peterson Myers, that even a small amount of chemicals would disrupt the hormonal system and cause irreversible effects on human development.
In response, the then Environment Agency, now the Environment Ministry, started a research project on endocrine disruptors called SPEED '98. Earlier this year, six years after the start of the study, the ministry issued an interim report that basically rejected public concern that chemicals in the ecology could affect the endocrine system of mammals.
Yet many working in the forefront of the medical field believe that the intake of chemicals through food and other routes have a serious effect on human health. (How safe is our food? / Experts warn about danger of chemicals Daily Yomiuri On-Line .)

I think that the problem of communication is contained in environmental problem at a big rate. The danger of toxic substance is often exaggerated and concealed. As the reason, the complexity of toxic conditions is confusing information. There are quantity, period, race, sex, age, and other various conditions. If you argue about a toxic substance, you should have two or more viewpoints. |

| Life at quake shelters tough |
[Nov. 1st, 2004|03:50 pm] |
Life is not easy at evacuation shelters. The biggest problem is toilets--people used to flush toilets feel uncomfortable using temporary chemical toilets. At the moment, there are not enough.
Evacuees keep warm not only with clothes and blankets, but also through hot drinks and warm meals. Many Hanshin Earthquake evacuees still remember the warmth of hot tea and soup served at evacuation centers. Therefore, a portable stove is a must-have, and should be added to the list of necessary relief goods.
Yuko Kuroda suggested spreading flattened cardboard boxes and newspapers on the floor at evacuation centers. Spreading a blanket over the newspaper and wrapping an evacuee with another blanket and newspaper was as warm as being wrapped up with three blankets, she said. Wrapping the feet with newspaper was as warm a pair of socks, she added.
"Volunteers should listen to evacuees. They should let the evacuee cry in a private space and hug them--that's mental care," she said. "If a boy or a girl wakes up and cries in the night, hold his or her hand and reassure them." Daily Yomiuri On-Line
After the Hanshin earthquake, Yasuo Tanaka sent many cosmetics at evacuation centers, and it pleased the depressed women very much. On other hand, evacuees were not pleased with all relief goods. For example, much clothing troubled them. What is needed there... I think that the question is the most important. If there is more information, the efficiency of support activities will be increased more. |

| Yosemite and Mt. Fuji Car Ban |
[Oct. 25th, 2004|01:51 am] |
The people who run Yosemite National Park want to make some changes. They say there are too many cars in the park. Sometimes, no more people can fit into the park.
The cars, trucks, and campers cause many problems. The cars make too much noise. People cannot hear each other talk. The best view of Yosemite Falls is from the parking lot. Adult Learning Activities
Although there were problems which were alike also in Mt. Fuji, traffic is forbidden over ten days around Mt. Fuji in summer from ten years before.
I knew these in detail on the Internet today. That it is compatible in trade and environment is the subject which the tourist resorts in the world have. If there are many people who are sharing the same problem, information for solving The problem is abundant on the Internet. It is important to compare information carefully, of course. |

| Coastal fishermen |
[Oct. 14th, 2004|01:36 am] |
Walking along the Japanese coastline is one of Kevin Short's favorite pastimes. he often find himself sitting among the fishfolk in order to talk having a booze, so he knows that coastal fishermen are among the most ecologically savvy people.
To begin with, most of them have in their heads a detailed map of the sea bottom in the surrounding waters. They are also experts at tides and winds. better example concerns the popular and delicious gastropod sazae, usually called top shell or horned turban in English. When he asked about the two different kinds of shells, they insisted that both were essentially the same animal. One of them explained that the shells with the heavy spines live in areas where the wave action is often rough; while the smooth-shelled versions are found in calmer waters. The spines are considered to be simply an adaptation that helps prevent the shells from being tossed around in a habitat characterized by strong surges.
Later on he found out that marine biologists agree completely.they often have a surprisingly detailed knowledge of the behavior and ecology of different species, especially those of commercial value. Many a marine biologist has been amazed to discover that an uneducated fisherman knows much more about a particular species than is found in a textbook.

I couldn't travel anywhere during this summer. My brother visited to me from Tokyo. He talked to me about his new life and he promised to show me Tokyo. however I knew he is very busy and there is no way he can keep the promise. I had the plan to go to South Korea with my family but I couldn't go there because of typhoon. I just stayed at home most of the time and I was sorry about it sometimes. so I'm going to go to Tokyo and South Korea in the near future. |

| My opinion about Karl Marx |
[Jul. 7th, 2004|02:41 am] |
Some people say, "Collapse of the Soviet Union beat Marx's theory", However, I think that there is no causal relationship in the two. I will explain the reason briefly. Laissez-faire!Let us free! The classic school of economics has this magic phrase as a doctrine. If this doctrine is protected, the optimal distribution of resources will be made and full employment will be realized. But Marx did not think so. In capitalism, there is always unemployment, so it is necessary to throw away capitalism for full employment, This is Marx's idea (how to realize full employment is not described!). However, many Marxists had misunderstanding, when pushing down capitalism and the beautiful world came. Although Marx as a religious symbol died with the Soviet Union, I think that Marx as a theorist is not dead yet. |

| My opinion about GMF |
[Jun. 30th, 2004|01:56 pm] |
|
I support GMF. I think it's hard to part with the technology developed and nobody can stop the spread. however The spread without a rule is not desirable for anyone. The influence which GMF will have on human beings 100 years after is unknown. if GMF destroy ecosystem, we have to have the never ending problem for the serious damage. I think GMF is the sword of Damocles which is equal to diffusion of nuclear weapons, so government and company should investigate the danger of GMF. I want the information of foods as judgment materials In order for individual to take responsibility. |

[Jun. 28th, 2004|01:44 pm] |
In the past I saw the following warnings at the tobacco shop in Australia. "Smoking can harm others" "Smoking kills" these warnings were written with big letters, so I knew that smoking is a weapon in Australia and I imagined the scene where I hide a tobacco in my hand and go to bank robbery. in recent years, smoking in japanese public place was forbidden gradually. I think that one of the causes is anti-smoking movement in foreign country. I imagin That warnings appear in japanese tobacco shop in the future. when Japanese people stop thinking that it is strange, I'll explain that it looked like a joke long time ago for young. |

I arrived at cairns airport in Australia. I was carrying a small bag on my buck. One officer of the custom called me and said.‘‘It that all your package?’’ I said ‘‘Yes’’ officer said ‘‘Why is your package so small?’’ I said ‘‘I hear the custom in Australia is severe. so I have small package. I will buy everything here’’ This happening got on my nerves, Why must I be suspected? After that I watched many Japanese passengers with big suitcases, thay passed easily without being suspected, so I was conspicuous compared with them. |
